Originated around 1900 in the US, where it is grown very few, and its name is due to be smaller than the Washington Navel, both the tree and its fruit.
It was imported into Spain in 1933 and since then remains one of the most important varieties, due to its earliness, productivity and quality of fruit. The fruit is globose and good size with the presence of navel. Its bark is easily separated from the pulp, when it reaches its full maturity is bright red, and its fruits have high quality. It is early maturing, and like most citrus varieties of early ripening, and reaches appropriate levels of sugars when the bark is still green, when we market it. However, in the big packing houses they do de-greening treatments of ethylene and high temperature for 48-72 hours, which causes the loss of chlorophyll in its peel, and change to orange, but also affects badly the taste.
